Privacy policy

Your files stay on your Mac.

DStacks does not collect your files or personal data. There is no account, no tracking, and no upload.

What DStacks does not collect

The DStacks app does not ask you to create an account, sign in, or enter an email address. It does not include tracking, and it does not send your files or a usage profile to GenerativeWorks.

This website does not include analytics scripts and does not take a sign-up. Downloading the installer sends GenerativeWorks one email with the time, IP address, and browser, so we know the file was requested. A host or network may keep ordinary connection logs. DStacks does not receive your files from the site.

Where your files go

Stacking moves your real files on the same Mac. Nothing is copied into a cloud owned by DStacks. The files live in one of two folders:

  • ~/Documents/.DStacks — hidden in Finder because the name starts with a dot. This is the usual choice.
  • ~/Desktop/Desktop Stacks Files — inside your Desktop, so macOS can keep syncing it if iCloud Desktop is already on.

iCloud syncing is Apple’s, not DStacks. The app itself works with no internet connection. Spreading, dissolving, or uninstalling moves the files back to the Desktop.

Permissions, and why

macOS asks for three permissions. Stacking does not work without them.

  • Desktop folder. So DStacks can see the files on your Desktop and move them into a stack.
  • Documents folder. So it can store stacks in ~/Documents/.DStacks when you choose the hidden location.
  • Automation, to control Finder. So it can move files and put icons back in their original positions.

DStacks does not need Accessibility access.

Notarized by Apple

DStacks is signed and notarized by Apple, then offered as a direct download. Notarization means Apple has checked that build for known malware. It is not on the Mac App Store: App Store apps run in a sandbox that cannot move Desktop files or restore Finder icon positions.

On first open, macOS may say the app was downloaded from the internet. That check uses the notarization ticket. The current download is version 2.41. Release notes are on the changelog.

Removing the app

Choose Uninstall DStacks… from the menu bar icon. It moves every stacked file back to the Desktop, removes the stacks folder, and then moves the app to the Trash. Dragging the app to the Trash on its own leaves the files in the storage folder. Questions about this policy: hello@dstacks.app.
