macOS desktop organizer
Movable file stacksfor your Mac desktop.
The Stacks feature Apple should have built. You choose the files, drag the pile anywhere, and double-click to put them back where they were.
Try it: select files, stack them, then Option-click the pile to look inside.

Stacks, but yours.
macOS has its own Stacks, but it only groups files automatically by kind or date. You can't choose which files go together. You can't move a stack, or look inside one without spreading it. And expanding it doesn't put files back where you left them. DStacks does all three. That is how you organize a messy Mac desktop into groups you actually chose.
Drag to compare.
Three ways to make a stack
Keyboard
Select files, press ⌃⌥S.
Right-click
“Stack 3 Items”, right in Finder's menu.
Shift-drag
Hold Shift while dragging files. Let go. Done.
Sort by type, or make them folders.
Auto-Stack by Type
Choose Auto-Stack by Type from the menu bar icon. One click gathers loose Desktop files into stacks by kind: Screenshots, Images, PDFs, Documents, Videos, Audio, Archives, and Installers. Folders stay where they are.
Turn a stack into a folder
Right-click a stack and choose Convert Stack into a Folder, or choose Convert All Stacks into Folders… from the menu bar. Each stack becomes a real folder on your Desktop named DS_ plus the stack's name, like DS_4 PDFs, right where the stack was. Undo Convert into Folders puts them back.
Small app. Lots of care.
Auto-Stack by Type
One click sorts loose files into Screenshots, Images, PDFs, Documents, Videos, Audio, Archives and Installers. Folders are left alone.
Drag stacks anywhere
Drag any stack wherever you like. Option-click opens its preview instead.
Peek inside
See what’s in a stack without opening it. Option-click shows a grid of thumbnails next to the stack. Click one to open the file.
Take files out
Need just one file? Take it out. Drag a thumbnail to the Desktop, a folder, the Trash or another app. The file is moved, never copied, and leaves the stack. Or double-click to spread the stack, then move a file apart from the others. Drop a file back on the stack any time.
Smart names
Stacks name themselves, like “4 PDFs”.
Exact spots, every time
Files return to precisely where you left them. Rearrange, and the new layout is remembered.
Add files any time
Drop more files onto a stack.
Dissolve with a flick
Drag a spread stack's outline far away and it dissolves. Or dissolve every stack from the menu.
Turn a stack into a folder
Right-click a stack, or convert them all from the menu bar. Each becomes a real folder on your Desktop named “DS_” plus the stack's name, right where the stack was.
Undo, just in case
Changed your mind? One click in the menu puts every file back in its stack.
What’s new
- Peek inside: Option-click for thumbnails, scroll to browse, and click a file to open it.
- Drag out a thumbnail: Move a file to the Desktop, a folder, the Trash or another app; never copy it.
- Move a file apart: Spread the stack and drag a file away to move it out, never copy it.
Your files stay real files.
A desktop declutter app for Mac. Files are moved on this computer and are never uploaded by DStacks. Read the privacy policy.
- DStacks moves your files into real folders, never copies. Choose
~/Documents/.DStacks(hidden), or~/Desktop/Desktop Stacks Filesfor macOS iCloud Desktop syncing. - If the app quits, your files remain in the storage location you selected.
- It never deletes a file.
- No DStacks account or tracking. The app works offline; macOS handles iCloud syncing if you enable it.
Lives in your menu bar.
A menu bar app for desktop files: stack, spread, convert, or dissolve without opening another window.
Install in a minute
- 1
Download and install
Download DStacks, open it, and drag the app to your Applications folder.
- 2
Open it and allow access
Open the app from Applications. macOS asks to let it use your Desktop and Documents folders and to control Finder. Allow all three, or stacking won't work.
- 3
Choose where files are stored
From the menu bar icon, choose Keep Stacked Files In → Hidden Folder in Documents (~/Documents/.DStacks), best for most people, or Folder on the Desktop (for iCloud) (~/Desktop/Desktop Stacks Files) if your Desktop syncs with iCloud. Changing this moves your files; nothing is copied.
- 4
Make your first stack
Select files directly on your Desktop in Finder and press ⌃⌥S. DStacks opens automatically when you log in so your stacks are ready. You can enable the Finder right-click menu from the menu bar icon.
A little guidance
Here to help.
Did you remove or quit the app and your files are gone? No problem. Find your files, make a change, or start fresh. You're always in control.
The fastest option: Install the app again and then uninstall it properly this time :)
Your files stay yours.
Real files. Real folders. Nothing deleted.
